 Not having a plan

Having a blog requires good planning. Just like setting up a new business, set a plan for your blog. Start with what you are writing about, for whom and why, then forecast where you’d like your blog to be in a month, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years… Set your sights on the future and build a plan of how to get your blog to where you want it to be.

2Not researching your content

What are you writing about and why? Do you have a special talent or knowledge in the area? What would make me want to read your blog over the million other blogs out there? What makes you different? People need a reason to read your blog, so think about what it is that makes you shine and show it to the world.

3Trying to be a jack-of-all-trades

Don’t try and be everything for everyone. Narrow down what it is you want your blog to be and stick to it. Do one thing well rather than many things half-baked. It’s important to find your strengths and outsource your weaknesses to create a solid brand awareness and generate new leads.

4Not knowing your audience

Knowing who your audience is #1. You may find as your blog progresses it calls out to one demographic you may not have anticipated which can be a welcome surprise. But when starting out, define who you think your main audience will be and write to reach those people. Are they professionals, stay-at-home-mums, tradies, singles, males or females? Define your audience and research what makes them tick.

5Being afraid to sell yourself

Now you have your blog you need to let the world know about it! The thing with blogging is that you need to sell yourself. If you’re not going to – then who is? Don’t be afraid to share amongst your family, friends and colleagues to get the ball rolling and the word out there. Learn the art of self-promotion – and how to do it well.
